The core principle of an integrated vortex flow meter is the Kármán vortex street principle. When fluid passes a bluff body inside the meter, alternating vortices are generated downstream. The sensor detects the vortex frequency, and the electronics process the signal to calculate flow.

USA VTON integrated vortex flow meters combine sensing, signal processing, and local indication within the instrument body.
1. Fluid Passes the Bluff Body and Creates Vortices
After entering the measuring passage, the medium passes the bluff body installed in the flow path.
The flow field changes as the fluid moves around the bluff body, creating periodic vortices downstream. The vortex shedding frequency has a defined relationship with fluid velocity.
The meter therefore does not directly measure a numerical flow value. It detects vortex behavior first and then calculates velocity and volumetric flow.
2. The Sensor Detects Frequency and Processes the Signal
Vortex shedding produces corresponding pressure or stress changes. The sensor detects these changes and converts them into an electrical signal.
The electronic module then amplifies, filters, and processes the signal according to the configured calculation relationship. The resulting flow data can be shown on the local display.
For steam and compressed-air applications, pressure and temperature compensation or calculation may be required when mass flow or standard-condition flow is needed.
3. Integrated Construction Supports Local Indication
Compared with separated sensing and display arrangements, an integrated vortex flow meter places the main electronic components within the instrument body, allowing operators to view flow and totalized values locally.
Because the electronics remain in the field environment, ambient temperature, vibration, humidity, and protection requirements should be considered during selection.
Application Example
At a certain industrial compressed-air pipeline, local monitoring of flow and totalized flow was required. Because the installation position was convenient for inspection, an integrated vortex flow meter was selected. The sensor detected vortex frequency and the electronics processed the signal before displaying the resulting flow data.
Application Advice
The integrated design provides convenient local indication and compact construction, but it does not mean that every process condition is automatically suitable. For steam and gas measurement, flow range, pressure, temperature, and vibration conditions should be confirmed.
