Separated Vortex Flow Meter Installation Requirements

The key installation requirements for a separated vortex flow meter include flow direction, straight-pipe conditions, pipe alignment, vibration, sensor/display positioning and signal wiring. Vortex meters are relatively sensitive to flow-profile disturbances, so installation should consider not only whether the meter can physically fit but also upstream disturbances, downstream equipment and the surrounding environment.

Separated Vortex Flow Meter

1. Confirm flow direction and installation location

Before installation, make sure the arrow on the meter matches the actual flow direction. The medium should enter the meter with a reasonably stable flow profile.

If an elbow, tee, valve, pump or other strong disturbance source is located immediately upstream, the flow profile may change. Appropriate upstream and downstream straight-pipe conditions should therefore be arranged according to the meter’s technical requirements. The required straight-pipe length varies with meter design and operating conditions and should not simply be replaced by one fixed value.

For steam measurement, condensate should also be considered. Pipeline slope, insulation and drainage should be properly planned to reduce liquid accumulation.

2. Maintain alignment and mechanical stability

The meter should remain aligned with the process pipeline as much as practical. Excessive mechanical stress caused by misalignment should be avoided.

If the pipeline has significant vibration, the influence on sensor signals should be evaluated. Areas close to compressors, pump groups and other periodic vibration sources should be assessed carefully.

For separated configurations, the sensor is installed on the pipeline while the display/electronics can be positioned according to field conditions. The connecting cable should be routed appropriately and protected from excessive temperature, vibration and interference.

3. Check signals during commissioning

After mechanical installation and wiring, check the power supply, signal lines, flow direction and display parameters.

After the medium is introduced, observe whether the flow signal is stable and compare it with the process operating condition. For steam and gas measurement, pressure and temperature-related parameters should also be checked against the meter configuration.

In one industrial steam-system modification, the pipeline area was relatively compact and operators could not easily approach the measuring point. A separated vortex flow meter was used, with the sensor installed on the process pipeline and the display positioned for convenient inspection. Flow direction, alignment, straight-pipe conditions, wiring and signal display were checked during installation.

Therefore, installation should consider the meter, pipeline flow profile, mechanical structure and electrical connection as an integrated system. Before installation, it is useful to prepare pipeline information, medium parameters, pipe size, pressure, temperature and upstream/downstream equipment conditions.
