How to Select a Threaded Vortex Flow Meter?

How should a threaded vortex flow meter be selected? The key is not simply the connection type. The process medium, flow range, pressure, temperature, pipe size, thread standard, and output signal should all be considered. USA VTON threaded vortex flow meters can be used for flow measurement in selected steam, gas, and liquid pipelines where threaded connections are required.

1. Confirm the Medium and Actual Flow Range

A vortex flow meter measures flow based on the vortex shedding generated when fluid passes a bluff body. Therefore, identifying the medium is the first step.

Steam, compressed air, nitrogen, natural gas, and selected liquid applications can be considered according to actual operating conditions. The minimum, normal, and maximum flow rates should be provided rather than the normal flow rate alone.

If the actual flow remains below the meter’s measurable range, the vortex signal may become unstable. If the flow is too high, the meter size and pressure loss should be reconsidered.

2. Match Pressure, Temperature, and Pipeline Parameters

The threaded vortex flow meter should be selected according to process pressure, temperature, and pipeline size. For high-temperature steam, operating temperature and pressure require particular attention.

The thread standard, pipe material, and available installation space should also be confirmed to ensure proper connection with the existing pipeline.

For compressible media such as steam and gases, pressure and temperature compensation or flow calculation requirements should be clarified. If mass flow or standard-condition flow is required, the relevant process calculation conditions should also be provided.

3. Select the Output According to the Control System

If only local flow indication is required, local display configuration can be considered. If the meter needs to connect to PLC or DCS systems, the output signal and communication method should be confirmed.

Typical requirements may include pulse output, 4–20 mA, or digital communication. Remote monitoring applications should also consider power supply, installation environment, and protection requirements.

Application Example

At a certain industrial steam pipeline, flow monitoring was required in a limited installation space with a threaded connection. The technical team evaluated steam pressure, temperature, minimum flow, normal flow, and maximum flow before determining the meter size, thread specification, and output configuration.

Selection Advice

Prepare the medium, minimum/normal/maximum flow, pressure, temperature, pipe size, thread standard, and output signal. For steam, compressed air, or natural gas applications, pressure and temperature should also be provided.
