How should an integrated vortex flow meter be selected? The key is to evaluate the medium, minimum/normal/maximum flow, pressure, temperature, pipe size, installation conditions, and output requirements rather than selecting the meter based only on nominal diameter.

USA VTON integrated vortex flow meters combine sensing, signal processing, and local indication within an integrated instrument structure. They can be considered for industrial measurement of steam, gases, and selected liquid applications.
1. Select According to the Medium and Flow Range
Vortex flow meters operate based on the Kármán vortex principle. When the medium passes the bluff body, periodic vortices are generated and detected by the sensor.
Typical applications include saturated steam, superheated steam, compressed air, nitrogen, natural gas, and selected liquid services.
The minimum, normal, and maximum flow rates should be provided. Normal flow alone may not be sufficient to determine whether the meter can provide stable measurement at low flow or whether the selected size is appropriate.
2. Confirm Pressure and Temperature
Pressure and temperature are directly related to the actual operating conditions. For steam measurement, steam type, operating pressure, and temperature should be confirmed together.
For gas applications, clarify whether the specified flow is actual-condition flow or standard-condition flow. If mass flow or standard-condition volume flow is required, pressure and temperature compensation or calculation may be necessary.
Pipe size, connection type, material, and available installation space should also be checked.
3. Select the Output Configuration According to the Control System
An integrated structure can provide convenient local flow indication. If the measured signal needs to be transmitted to a PLC or DCS, the required output should be confirmed, such as 4–20 mA, pulse output, or digital communication.
For remote monitoring, power supply, protection requirements, and ambient temperature should also be considered. Strong vibration at the installation location should be communicated during selection.
Application Example
At a certain industrial steam pipeline, local flow monitoring and signal transmission to a control system were required. The technical team evaluated steam pressure, temperature, minimum flow, normal flow, and maximum flow before determining the meter configuration and matching the pipe size and output requirements.
Selection Advice
Prepare the medium, minimum/normal/maximum flow, pressure, temperature, pipe size, connection type, output signal, and power supply before technical confirmation. Complete information helps USA VTON configure the integrated vortex flow meter according to the application.
