Why Do Elbows and Valves Affect Vortex Flow Meter Installation?

The key installation factors for a threaded vortex flow meter include flow direction, upstream and downstream straight pipe sections, pipeline alignment, threaded connection, sealing, and vibration conditions. USA VTON threaded vortex flow meters use a compact connection format, but proper installation remains important for stable measurement.

Vortex Flow Meter

1. Match the Installation Direction to Flow Direction

Before installation, check the flow-direction arrow on the meter body. The actual process flow should follow the indicated direction.

The thread specification must match the pipeline connection. Avoid excessive tightening during installation because unnecessary mechanical stress may be applied to the connection or instrument.

If the pipeline is significantly misaligned or eccentric, the pipeline condition should be corrected before installing the meter.

2. Provide Appropriate Straight Pipe Sections

Vortex flow meters can be affected by upstream flow conditions. If an elbow, valve, reducer, or other disturbance is installed too close to the meter, the velocity profile may become distorted and affect measurement.

The required straight pipe arrangement should therefore be determined according to the specific pipe size, meter design, and piping layout.

Locations with severe vibration should also be avoided where possible. For steam and gas pipelines, condensate and pulsating flow should be considered.

3. Check Sealing and Signals After Installation

After mechanical installation, verify that the threaded connection is properly secured and that there is no obvious leakage risk.

After power-up, observe the flow indication and output signal under actual flow conditions. If the meter is connected to a PLC or DCS, verify that the local indication corresponds with the signal received by the control system.

For high-temperature media, insulation, protection, and maintenance access should also be considered according to site safety requirements.

Application Example

At a certain industrial compressed-air pipeline, a threaded vortex flow meter was installed. The installation team reserved appropriate straight pipe sections according to the piping layout, verified flow direction and thread specification, and then checked the display and output signal under actual airflow.

Installation Advice

A threaded vortex flow meter should not be treated as a device that can simply be screwed into the pipeline and used immediately. Before installation, confirm straight pipe sections, flow direction, pipe size, thread specification, vibration conditions, and medium state. For steam measurement, condensate and pipeline insulation deserve particular attention.
