How Does an Electric Floating Ball Valve Work? USA VTON Explains

An electric floating ball valve works by using an electric actuator to rotate the stem and floating ball, changing the flow passage to control the medium. USA VTON combines the floating-ball valve structure with an electric actuator for automated pipeline control.

1. The Electric Actuator Converts Electrical Energy into Rotation

After receiving an opening or closing command, the electric actuator converts electrical energy into mechanical rotational movement.

The actuator output torque should match the actual operating torque of the floating ball valve. Valve size alone is not enough; process pressure, sealing friction, temperature, and operating frequency should also be considered.

2. The Stem Rotates the Floating Ball

The ball inside a floating ball valve is not fixed by a lower stem. Instead, it is rotated by the valve stem.

When the ball passage aligns with the pipeline, the medium can flow through. When the ball rotates to the closed position, the solid portion of the ball blocks the passage.

Under an appropriate differential pressure, process pressure can push the floating ball toward the downstream seat, contributing to the sealing effect. Actual sealing performance depends on the seat design, pressure, and process conditions.

3. The Control System Enables Remote Operation

The electric actuator allows operators to send open or close commands from a control system instead of manually operating the valve.

When position feedback is configured, the actual valve status can be transmitted back to the control system for monitoring and automated interlocking. For modulating applications, valve position can also be adjusted according to the control signal.

Application Example

At a certain industrial process pipeline, remote on-off control was required. After an opening command was sent, the actuator rotated the stem and moved the ball passage into alignment with the pipeline. After a closing command, the ball rotated in the opposite direction to shut off the flow passage.

Operating Advice

Selecting an electric floating ball valve requires more than determining the DN size. Pressure, temperature, medium, differential pressure, operating frequency, and control requirements should be confirmed before matching the valve and electric actuator.
