How to Select an Electric Modulating Ball Valve?

An electric modulating ball valve is mainly used in automated pipelines where the flow rate needs to be continuously adjusted. Unlike an electric on-off ball valve, which is primarily used for fully open or fully closed operation, a modulating ball valve changes valve position according to a control signal. Selection therefore requires consideration of pipe size, pressure, temperature, adjustment range, actuator torque, control signal, and position feedback. USA VTON electric modulating ball valves can be configured according to actual operating conditions.

1. Determine the Medium and Pipeline Parameters

The first step is to identify the medium, minimum flow, normal flow, maximum flow, operating pressure, and operating temperature. Nominal pipe size and connection type should also be confirmed.

Water, gases, oils, and industrial fluids have different flow characteristics and may require different valve-body, ball, seat, and sealing materials. If the medium is corrosive, high-temperature, or contains particles, the wetted materials and applicable operating conditions should be verified.

USA VTON can configure electric modulating ball valves according to the actual medium and pipeline conditions.

2. Confirm the Modulating and Actuator Requirements

The purpose of an electric modulating ball valve is not simply to rotate the ball. It must change valve position according to control commands. Therefore, the required control method should be clearly defined, including analog control, position commands, and the interface requirements of the automation system.

The actuator must also be properly matched to the actual valve operating torque. Valve structure, size, process pressure, sealing friction, operating temperature, and operating frequency can all affect torque. Actuator selection should therefore not be based solely on DN.

If real-time valve-position monitoring is required, the feedback method should also be confirmed so that the system can form a control loop of “signal input → valve movement → position feedback.”

3. Check the Adjustment Range and Field Environment

The modulating capability of the electric ball valve should correspond to the required process flow range. Long-term operation at an unsuitable opening position may affect the actual control process, so normal operating conditions should be considered during selection.

Power supply, ambient temperature, protection requirements, installation space, and maintenance conditions should also be reviewed. Special environmental conditions such as vibration or humidity should be considered when configuring the actuator.

At an industrial fluid system, an electric modulating ball valve can first be selected according to medium, flow, pressure, and temperature. The actuator can then be matched according to operating torque and control-system requirements, followed by confirmation of the position-feedback method.

Selection suggestion: Prepare the medium, minimum/normal/maximum flow, pressure, temperature, pipe size, power supply, control signal, and position-feedback requirements. USA VTON can then use the complete operating conditions for technical selection.
